Level 9 blonde is a depth label used by color brands to mark very light or extra-light blonde shades, but the same number can mean a finished color on one box and the maximum lift a lightener delivers on another.

Schwarzkopf files 9.50 as "Extra Light Blonde Gold Natural," while BLONDME Premium Lightener 9+ uses the 9 to describe how many levels it can lift dark hair, not the shade you end up with.

What Level 9 Means

A level 9 box sits beside lightener promising up to 9 levels of lift.

A box labeled level 9 and a lightener promising "up to 9 levels of lift" are not saying the same thing.

Color lines use the number for a finished depth: one retailer files level 9 under "Very Light Blonde", while Schwarzkopf’s Essensity 9.50 is called "Extra Light Blonde Gold Natural".

BLONDME Premium Lightener 9+ uses the 9 for how far it can raise a dark base.

Some shade directories simply group products under "Level 9". No single level system ties these together, so read the number as a brand’s label, not a guarantee of the shade you’ll get, and judge by the color chart instead.

Level 9 Shade Names

A blonde hair photo accompanies shade names whose codes vary by brand.

Digits mean different things from brand to brand: 03 is pearl on Garnier Olia but natural gold on Wella Illumina.

Read the tone name, not the code. A 9A reads as light ash at Clairol and at L’Oréal Excellence Creme alike, but pro lines write ash as 9/1.

Brand and line Code Tone
Clairol Nice’n Easy 9A Light Ash Blonde
Clairol Nice’n Easy 9G Light Golden Blonde
Garnier Olia 9.03 Light Pearl Blonde
Garnier Olia 9.2 Rose Gold
Garnier Color Sensation 9.20 Light Pink
Revlon ColorSilk 95 Light Sun Blonde
Wella Koleston 9/1 Very Light Blonde Ash
Wella Illumina 9/03 Natural Gold

Colors, Toners and Lighteners

A blonde hair photo accompanies examples of masks, toners and powder lighteners.

A color-depositing mask like Color Fresh Golden Gloss is temporary color. Used once a week, it refreshes light blonde and conditions, but it lightens nothing.

Pearl Blonde, Caramel Glaze and Rose Blaze work the same way. Toners do a different job: Blondor /18 Pale Platinum is a permanent liquid toner, and its non-progressive formula keeps the tone from intensifying or building up.

BlondorPlex /81 Pale Silver is another toner shade. Powder lighteners come first, since they create the pale base a toner then adjusts.

Read their labels closely, because BLONDME Premium Lightener 9+ promises up to 9 levels of lift. That describes how far it can lighten dark hair, not a finished level 9 blonde.

Lightener Directions

The mixing checklist gives separate ratios for highlights, balayage and on-scalp use.

Blond Studio 9 levels Bonder Inside mixes only with the brand’s Oil-Developer, and the ratio shifts with the application:

  • Open-air highlights and balayage: 1:1, or 30g powder to 30ml developer, for up to 50 minutes.
  • Covered highlights: 1:1.5, or 30g powder to 45ml developer, for up to 50 minutes.
  • On-scalp: 1:2 (30g to 60ml) or 1:3 (30g to 90ml), with a 20-volume maximum, for up to 50 minutes.
  • Developer tops out at 30 volumes (9%) for everything else.
  • Never exceed the development times or apply heat. I’d treat that as non-negotiable.

Bond Protection Claims

A powder packet and lightener bowl sit apart from the metal-detox and sealer bottles.

Schwarzkopf Professional says BLONDME Premium Lightener 9+ builds its bond care into the powder itself:

Integrated Anti-Metal Bond Protection Technology protects the hair bonds during processing for minimized hair breakage. No bonding additives or anti-metal treatments needed.

— Schwarzkopf Professional

That would mean one less product in the bowl. The brand also claims a biodegradable chelating agent, anti-yellow agents against warm undertones, and no mixing, measuring or overdosing.

L’Oréal Professionnel makes a similar bonder-inside pitch, then adds a step: Metal Detox and Vitamino Acidic Sealer treatments alongside the lightening. These are manufacturer claims, and for hair that already feels fragile I’d take the extra step.

How Long Color Lasts

Shinefinity’s pearl ash and natural mahogany shades come in 2.0 oz tubes.

Wella Shinefinity Zero Lift Glaze, a demi-permanent gel-cream, is rated to last up to 6 weeks. That claim belongs to Shinefinity, and I wouldn’t carry it over to any other level 9 toner or gloss.

Shades such as 09/81 very light blonde pearl ash and 09/05 very light blonde natural mahogany come in a 2.0 oz tube, and the formula is vegan with a balanced pH.

"Up to" is a ceiling, not a promise.

Plan on the full 6 weeks only if your hair is healthy and you wash gently. If you see the pearl or ash tone fading sooner, treat that as normal for a demi-permanent color, not as a defect.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the built-in bond protection in BLONDME lightener do?

Schwarzkopf says it forms a protective layer around the hair bonds to minimize breakage during lightening. A biodegradable anti-metal agent also envelops metal ions in the hair, which stops damaging radicals from forming.

The brand says this means no separate bonding additives or anti-metal treatments, and no mixing, measuring or overdosing. These are manufacturer claims.

What are the levels of blonde?

There is no single standard, because each brand uses the number as its own label.

One retailer files level 9 under Very Light Blonde, while Schwarzkopf’s Essensity 9.50 is called Extra Light Blonde Gold Natural. A lightener marked 9+ is a different thing again: it describes how many levels it can lift dark hair, not the finished shade.

How do I know which toner to use on my hair?

Choose by the tone name, not the code, because the digits change from brand to brand. For example, 03 is pearl on Garnier Olia but natural gold on Wella Illumina.

Toners are meant for the pale base a powder lightener creates; Blondor /18 Pale Platinum and BlondorPlex /81 Pale Silver are two examples. Color-depositing masks only refresh tone temporarily and lighten nothing.

What color is 9N in hair color?

Codes aren’t consistent across brands, and the same digits can mean different tones. For comparison, Clairol Nice’n Easy 9A is Light Ash Blonde and 9G is Light Golden Blonde.
